Open Mika is an open-source Java runtime dedicated to supporting the OSGi RFC 26 Foundation Execution Environment. It is characterised by a small footprint both in terms of the executable size of the runtime itself (<2MB for both VM and class libraries, in the "headless" version) and in terms of the external libraries used (libc and on Linux libpthread). The BSD-style licence is equally lightweight in the obligations it places on the redistributor; the source code may be modified or extra libraries may be linked in without the obligation to provide source code to end users.

The Mika Max product combines Open Mika with additonal components and a Service Level Agreement. The additional software components are licensed for distribution as part of a development kit in source and/or binary form, and as part of an end product in binary form only. (Where the additional components make use of or are derived from open-source projects the relevant open-source licence applies).

Apogee's JREs are based on Java technologies licensed by Apogee from IBM, such as the J9 Java Virtual Machine (J9VM) compatible with Sun's J2ME CDC VM and the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler, which are ported to the OS/processor platforms requested by Apogee's customers to create the base J9VM+JIT JREs. Then, Apogee adds to each base JRE the OS/processor ports of Java class libraries, API packages, and other components needed by Java applications of a given customer or because of the manner in which the JRE will be used by this customer, and tunes the resulting JRE for the highest possible performance on such applications.
